Information for applicants
Join us for the 2026 LAMASUS / BrightSpace / Tools4CAP Summer School: June 8-12, 2026, at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria.
The application period is open till January 31, 2026.
Your application should include:
- A motivation letter stating your motivation to participate in this program, including your prior applied experience with land use modelling, how the course fits in your current studies / work, as well as your plans to use models in future research / work (1 page maximum)
- A concise CV that reflects your education and relevant experience (2 pages maximum)
The participants should have quantitative skills including some knowledge of R, Python or any other scientific programming environment (in the latter case, there is no guarantee that trainers of this school can offer guidance). The course itself does not feature explicit coding by participants, but and understanding of the concepts will be helpful.
Our selection committee will review all applications. Criteria include the requirements as well as the potential benefit to the applicant.
We aim to inform successful candidates by March 15, 2026. The number of participants is limited to 30.
Course Fee
The course fee is covered by the LAMASUS, BrightSpace and Tools4CAP projects. The funding covers all training activities, lunches, coffee breaks, and a welcome and final dinner.
Please note: the course fee does not cover travel and transportation, accommodation, other dinners or fees related to visa applications. No scholarship funds are available to support applicants with these fees. The training team will support applicants by providing suggestions and information related to not-covered logistics questions.
Non-European citizens Visa requirements
Non-European citizens require a valid VISA to enter Austria. IIASA will support the visa application process with a support letter so that students can complete the visa application. This normally takes up to 8 weeks. IIASA cannot guarantee the visa will be processed in time.
Please note: For Iranian nationals, the Austrian Embassy in Tehran is reopening in November 2025. We anticipate visa applications to experience delays.

IIASA is located 15 km south of Vienna in Laxenburg, Lower Austria. The commute from Vienna to Laxenburg will take 40 to 60 minutes (depending on the location of your accommodation). We recommend staying near the Vienna Central Station “Hauptbahnhof” as public transportation from there to IIASA via bus will take approximately 30 minutes, one way.
IIASA is based in Schloss Laxenburg, a former imperial palace.
